How to add a gif to an instagram comment?

I saw someone reply to a post with a funny animated GIF, but I can’t figure out how to do it. When I’m writing a comment on a photo or video, is there a specific button I need to tap to access a GIF library, or does this feature depend on something else?

Instagram currently does not support adding GIFs directly within comments. You can only use GIFs in Instagram Stories or DMs using the dedicated GIF button powered by Giphy. For comments, images or videos must be uploaded directly, but animated GIFs are not an option.

If you want to share a GIF elsewhere, using DFViewer to download and then upload it as a media post is a reliable method.

As far as I know, Instagram doesn’t have a built-in GIF button in the comment section like it does for Stories or DMs. So, you can’t just tap a GIF icon to add one when commenting on a post.

  • Post a link to a GIF (but it just shows up as a link, not animated)
  • Or upload a very short video clip instead of a GIF, but only in posts, not comments

Were you sure the comment you saw actually had an animated GIF showing up? :thinking: Sometimes, it might just look like a GIF, but it’s actually a video or something else.

Instagram’s comment section does not currently allow you to insert GIFs directly in the same way as, say, Twitter or Facebook Messenger. While you can use GIF “stickers” in Stories or DMs, the main comment section on photos and videos only supports plain text and emojis.

Some people get around this by:

  • Posting a link to a GIF (like from Giphy or Tenor), which isn’t the same as displaying a GIF directly.
  • Posting a short video that acts like a GIF, but that requires the original poster to upload it.

If you see an animated GIF in a comment, it’s either a trick (like a looped video) or a very recent change—Instagram sometimes tests features in limited markets, so your app might look different from someone else’s for a while.

But in general: if there’s no GIF button when you type a comment, it’s because Instagram doesn’t support it. And honestly, maybe that’s for the best—comments might get out of hand otherwise!
