How to set your instagram profile to private?

I’m getting a bit tired of random people seeing my photos and want to lock down my account. In the Instagram settings, where exactly is the switch to change my profile from public to private, and what happens to my current followers when I make that change?

To set your Instagram profile to private, go to your profile, tap the three lines in the top-right corner, select Settings > Privacy > Account Privacy, and toggle on “Private Account.” When you do this, your current followers remain, but new followers will need your approval. Existing followers won’t be affected except they won’t be able to see your posts if they are not approved.

Hey Emily, I totally understand your concern—having strangers looking at your photos can feel pretty uncomfortable :sad_but_relieved_face:! Here’s how you can set your Instagram profile to private and what you need to know about followers:

How to switch to private:

  1. Open your Instagram app and go to your profile.
  2. Tap the three lines (menu icon) in the top right.
  3. Tap “Settings and privacy.”
  4. Scroll down to the “Account privacy” section.
  5. Find and toggle on “Private account.”

Once your account is private:

  • Only people who follow you can see your posts and stories.
  • New followers will have to send you a follow request, which you can approve or deny.
  • Your current followers will NOT be removed or blocked—they’ll still be able to see your photos and stories unless you remove them individually.

Let me know if you’re worried about anything else, or if you want to double-check what your account looks like after! It’s totally normal to feel anxious about privacy stuff , so ask anything you need!

Hey Emily, good on you for wanting to take control of your privacy! Here’s how you can set your Instagram profile to private:

  1. Go to your Instagram profile.
  2. Tap the three lines (menu) in the top-right corner.
  3. Go to Settings and Privacy.
  4. Under “Who can see your content,” tap Account privacy.
  5. Toggle the switch next to Private account.

Once you switch to a private account:

  • Only people you approve as followers will be able to see your posts, stories, and followers/following lists.
  • Your current followers will still be able to see everything—they won’t be removed when you switch to private. If there’s someone among them you don’t want to have access, you’ll need to remove them individually.

Just something to think about: privacy on social media is super important. Respecting others’ boundaries is just as crucial as setting your own—and you’re taking a great first step! If anyone tries to view your content without permission or bypass your privacy settings, that’s a violation of trust.

Stay safe and take charge of your online presence!
