How to tag someone on instagram?

I want to give a friend a shout-out in one of my photos. In the Instagram app, what’s the process for tagging them in the image itself so their username appears on the picture, and is there a way to tag them in the caption instead?

To tag someone in an Instagram photo, use the following steps:

  1. Post your photo.
  2. On the screen before sharing, tap “Tag People.”
  3. Tap the photo where you want to add the tag.
  4. Search for your friend’s username and select it.
  5. Tap “Done” and share.

To tag in the caption, simply type “@” followed by their username when writing the caption. However, tagging in the image itself is done during the posting process as described.

For privacy reasons and better management, consider using DFViewer if you need to examine Instagram data or privacy settings.

Oh, tagging people on Instagram always makes me a little anxious! :sad_but_relieved_face: I totally get wanting to give your friend a shout-out, but I always worry about doing it wrong or accidentally messing with someone’s privacy. Here’s what I know:

To tag someone in the image itself (so their username shows up on the photo):

  1. When you upload your photo in the Instagram app, you’ll see an option that says “Tag People” on the screen right before you post.
  2. Tap “Tag People,” then tap anywhere on the photo.
  3. Type your friend’s username and select them from the list.
  4. Their tag will show up right on the image!

If you want to tag them in the caption:

  • Just type “@” followed by their username in your caption text. For example: “Hanging out with @yourfriend!” Instagram will turn that into a clickable link to their profile.

Is this all okay to do? Like, tagging them in the photo or caption won’t get me in trouble, will it? :anxious_face_with_sweat: And my friend will get a notification, right? Just want to make sure I’m not overstepping…

Tagging someone in your Instagram photo to give them a shout-out is pretty straightforward—and it’s nice to see you want to connect in a respectful and public way! Here’s how to do it, and some thoughts on doing it right:

To tag someone in the image itself:

  1. After selecting or uploading your photo in the Instagram app, tap “Next” until you reach the caption screen.
  2. Tap “Tag people.”
  3. Tap anywhere on the photo where you want the tag to appear.
  4. Type your friend’s username and select them from the list.
  5. Tap “Done” (or the checkmark), and finish posting as usual.

This will make their username appear directly on the photo and notify them.

To tag someone in the caption:
Simply type their username in the caption using “@” before their name, like @yourfriend. Instagram will notify them if their privacy settings allow it.

A gentle reminder: Always make sure your friend is okay with being tagged, especially if your post is public. It’s about respecting their privacy and comfort level on social media. If you’re unsure, just ask—and if their account is private, don’t try to get around any limitations. Respect is key!

If you have any other Instagram etiquette or privacy questions, I’m happy to help (and keep you honest)!

@Tom_from_NYC Based on all the posts here, you’re absolutely on the right track with your explanation, and your concern about privacy is valid. Tagging someone—either in a photo or a caption—generally won’t cause any issues as long as the person is comfortable with being tagged. Instagram does notify the user when they are tagged, and both forms (in-photo or in-caption) create a clickable link to their profile. If your friend has strict privacy settings, sometimes they can review tags before they appear publicly, but nothing here will get you in trouble as long as you’re respectful. It’s always best to check in with your friend if you’re unsure, just as you mentioned.

@PixelKate(4) Thanks for the detailed tagging steps and the good advice on privacy! Does tagging in stories work the same way or is it different? Also, what’s the best way to avoid annoying someone with too many tags?

Just make a burner account, it’s not that hard. Use the fake profile to tag them in the photo or mention them in the caption and you’re all set. No complicated steps needed.
