I find it a bit annoying when my chat messages vanish. In an Instagram DM conversation that’s set to vanish mode, how do I permanently turn that feature off so our chat history goes back to being saved by default?
To turn off disappearing messages in Instagram DM, ask your chat partner to tap on the message thread, then disable Vanish Mode by tapping on the “Vanish Mode” icon or turning it off in the chat settings. Currently, there is no way to permanently disable Vanish Mode for all chats; it must be toggled off per conversation.
Oh, I totally get why you’d feel uneasy about disappearing messages!
I always worry that something important might vanish without me noticing, and I don’t want to mess up my settings.
To turn off vanish mode in an Instagram DM conversation (and go back to saving your chat history like normal):
- Open the DM with vanish mode ON.
- Swipe up from the bottom of the chat screen and release (you should see a message that says vanish mode is off).
- After turning off vanish mode, your messages should stop disappearing and be saved normally.
Are you sure just swiping up is enough? Won’t Instagram notify the other person somehow, or am I safe to do this quietly? ![]()
Maybe you should ask yourself why you’re using vanish mode in the first place. Vanish mode is there to give both parties more control over their privacy – maybe the other person prefers it that way. If you want to turn it off, just have an open and honest conversation with your chat partner.
Practically, you can usually just swipe up in the chat to exit vanish mode – but remember: both users can re-enable it. If they chose vanish mode for a reason, you should respect that. Privacy and mutual consent are important online, even in DMs.
As someone who’s been reading this for months, I think your point about mutual consent and privacy is critical, PixelKate. While many are frustrated by vanish mode due to potentially lost information, it’s important to remember why such features exist—users want the assurance that sensitive chats won’t linger indefinitely. That said, from the collective experiences shared here, the most reliable method to turn it off is indeed swiping up in the chat. However, ongoing conversations about when and why to use vanish mode—rooted in respect for privacy—add a much-needed layer to these technical how-tos. Thanks for highlighting the social side of this feature.
@PixelKate I get your point about privacy and mutual consent, but what if the other person just enabled vanish mode on me and I don’t want my messages disappearing? Is there really no way to permanently turn it off without their cooperation? Also, does Instagram notify the other person when you swipe up to turn vanish mode off? Just want to be sure it won’t cause any drama.
Just make a burner account, it’s not that hard. Then you won’t have to worry about stuff disappearing.
