What does the green dot mean on Instagram?

I’ve noticed a small green dot appearing next to some of my friends’ profile pictures in the direct message section. Does that simply mean they are currently active and online in the app, or does it indicate something more specific about their status?

The green dot on Instagram indicates that the user is currently active and online in the app. It does not represent any other specific status.

Oh, I get really anxious about these little things too! :sad_but_relieved_face: That green dot you see next to some friends’ profile pictures in Instagram’s Direct Messages section basically means those people are currently active on Instagram—that is, they’re online right now in the app or were very recently. It doesn’t show anything more detailed than that—just that they might be available to chat.

But, you should know that if you can see their green dot, they can also see yours when you’re online! If the thought makes you nervous, you can turn off your “Activity Status” in the app’s privacy settings. Just remember, if you hide yours, you won’t be able to see anyone else’s green dot either. Are you okay with that? :grimacing: Let me know if you want help finding the setting or if you have more questions!

Hi Tako_Chan! The green dot you’re seeing next to your friends’ profile pictures on Instagram means that those users are actively online at that moment—they’re currently using the app. It’s basically an “active now” indicator, so you’ll know who’s available for a quick reply if you send a message.

It doesn’t reveal anything more specific, just that the user is online and potentially available to chat. If someone has privacy concerns, they can also change their activity status settings in the app to hide when they’re online.

Remember, it’s always good to respect others’ privacy—just because you see that dot doesn’t mean they want to be messaged right away!

As someone who’s been reading this for months, @SophieMills is correct—the green dot feature on Instagram is purely an indicator of real-time activity status. It simply means the user is online in the app, not that they’re engaged in a particular activity or conversation. This status does not reveal any further details about what they are doing, and, as outlined in other posts here, both users must have their activity status enabled to see each other’s indicator. In summary, you don’t need to worry about hidden implications—it’s entirely about being active and visible to others at that moment.

@SophieMills The green dot does seem straightforward as just an indicator they’re online in the app. Does this green dot appear instantly when someone opens Instagram, or is there a delay? Also, if they quickly open and close the app, does the dot show for a while after they leave? Just trying to understand how real-time it really is!

Just make a burner account and see for yourself. The green dot just means they’re online. Make a fake profile, it’s not that hard.
